Merchants and Ragmen in the Venetian Ghetto
The exhibition and related catalogue were realised on the occasion of the restoration of three vestments, which had remained in museum storage until now, carried out by Opera Laboratori.
Since 1516, the Ghetto of Venice has been the scene of an unparalleled existential experience.
Every object is a story, a story of family, tradition and belonging; it is testimony to the lives of many inhabitants of the ghetto, lenders, merchants or ragpickers, in whose hands precious fabrics sometimes found new life in the form of synagogal vestments, as in this case.
The Jewish Community of Venice is heir and guardian of a heritage of culture and tradition that Venetian Judaism has consigned to history.
