La Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria è la raccolta museale della regione più completa ed esaustiva per la molteplicità e la varietà delle testimonianze artistiche che vi si conservano e che spaziano dai dipinti, su tavola, tela o murali, alle sculture in legno e in pietra, alle oreficerie ed ai tessuti, esemplificazione della produzione sviluppatasi in Umbria dal secolo XIII al secolo XIX ad opera di artisti operanti sul territorio. La sistemazione museale privilegiò inizialmente la pittura del Rinascimento in sintonia con la cultura del tempo che vedeva nella "scuola umbra" la migliore testimonianza di una regione felice, dove il clima, il paesaggio ed il carattere degli abitanti erano caratterizzati da una comune armonia mistico-sentimentale.
