Angels

When Jesus talked to his first disciples, he said: “You will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” (John 1:51). Angels, therefore, are a fundamental part of Christian faith, though they are now often thought of as imaginary, folkloristic beings. “Apparitions” of angels, promised by the Saviour himself, have been part of the expectations of believers throughout the ages.

From blazing and powerful seraphim to more intimate and familiar guardian angels, artists have painted spirits in many ways and settings inspired by the Scriptures, and used them to adorn devotional scenes in which their ethereal figures are the firm and powerful link between man and the Creator.
Artists from all ages (from Giotto, Michelangelo and Raphael to Guercino, Botticelli and Caravaggio) who have attempted to capture these benevolent spirits have paid extraordinary homage to them.  Lucia Toso
