Since ancient times, human beings of any civilization and culture have been using all shrewdnesses to exalt their face and body. Cosmetics were at times intended as tribal codes associated with magical or hunting rituals, capable of removing evil spirits or even to recover from illnesses. The make-up could be used as a sign of distinction and a symbol of supremacy or could become a unifying sign for the mass. Therefore, the use of make-up was not strictly linked to the concept of exaltation of beauty, as it is often nowadays. The author intends to investigate the practice of make-up in ancient times, focusing on the detailed analysis of the distinctive characteristics of each population.
