Museum heritage as living material of collective memory

A museum is not merely a place of conservation, but a space for interpretation and restitution, where works continue to generate knowledge and meaning for future generations. From this perspective, acquisition—or rather, collecting, as redefined in the new definition of a museum approved in Prague in 2022—takes on a renewed value: each object becomes an opportunity to broaden our understanding of its history and the relationships it embodies. Each new work is an invitation for research, a field for interdisciplinary comparison, a gateway to new horizons of meaning. Over time, numerous works from the Reggia di Caserta have been entrusted to other institutions for various reasons. The decision to bring some of them back today is not a matter of reclaiming them, but rather a desire to restore narrative coherence and historical integrity to the palace's heritage. Bringing back the works that tell the story of its origins and patronage means reactivating the dialogue between architecture and collections, between past and present. The volume also discusses issues related to the restoration of these works, illustrating the most advanced methods and techniques used nowadays to ensure their conservation and full legibility.
