Siena dei nonni

After the success of the book Siena dei bisnonni, a year later Luca Luchini continues his journey through the history of his city with a new publication, the first of two volumes dedicated to the 20th century. 

With a captivating journalistic style, the chapters deal with many aspects of Sienese life, from the end of the Great War to the birth of political parties, from urban renewal to the hygiene issue, from the difficult relations between fascists, socialists and Catholics to gymnastics and football.

Some fundamental figures of these decades emerge, including Fabio Bargagli Petrucci, art historian as well as historical Podestà of Siena who undertook numerous struggles for the improvement of the city, and Achille Sclavo, hygienist doctor, Sienese by adoption who, with his discoveries, offered an enormous contribution to the improvement of the general hygienic-sanitary conditions of the citizens of Siena. 

A rich photographic collection illustrates the volume. Among the pages we find faces of adults and children immortalised in the streets, crowded squares, military parades, but also shots dedicated to the renovation of some neighbourhoods, the ingenious waste collection system, lavatories, gyms and historical Sienese factories.
