The Uffizi
A vast, high-quality photographic repertoire, selected by a distinguished Italian art historian, Raffaele Monti, guides the reader through the timeless, seemingly endless masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery. From the museum’s vast, complex collection, daunting in its mere size and quality for even the most scholarly of art-lovers, Raffaele Monti has provided a sampling that, without ignoring the ‘classical’, manages to provide a panorama of the celebrated artists who have determined the very scope of European art
Raffaele Monti, professor of modern and contemporary art history and eminent scholar of Italian art, made his mark early in life with his writings on 16th-century painting and critical monograph on Andrea del Sarto (1955). He has since authored numerous insightful studies on the 19th century and essays on the perspective issues inherent in cinema, in which he develops the thinking of his teacher and mentor, Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti. An eccentric and eclectic personality, he is also a passionate musicologist and poet.
