Vedere ed essere visti
The German-Italian scholar Isabell Franconi has undertaken archival historical research of fundamental importance for the study of art history.
She has succeeded in fact in recognising and cataloguing within the Uffizi's collection of self-portraits - the largest of its kind in the world, and the only one that can boast an activity that has continued for three and a half centuries - those from the Lorraine era.
The uniqueness of this collection is mainly due to the multifaceted interests of Cardinal Leopold de' Medici (1617 - 1675) who, through his agents, acquired a large number of self-portraits of painters, which were listed in detail in the inventory of his flats in Pitti, drawn up at his death.
Artists of the time vied to be included in this precious collection.
