MADDALENA, una donna, tante donne
In the history of art, few characters evangelical characters have been loved and represented more than St Mary Magdalene.
After the Mother of God, St Mary Magdalene is not only the woman most mentioned in the Gospels, but also the most represented in sacred art of all times.
This volume proposes an interpretation of the 'image' that the Saint has assumed and clothed over the centuries: in the West she has become from the beginning a jumble of misunderstandings, overlapping with other female figures female figures from the Gospels or other hagiographies, misinterpretations and deliberate forgetfulness that have, however, precisely because of this concentrated on her the creative effort of numerous artists, be they painters sculptors, poets, writers or musicians.
The volume, accompanied by an extremely rich iconographic apparatus, closes with the reading, "more emotional than critical", of seven works that feature her, from Masaccio to Piero della Francesca, from Raphael to Titian, up to Emilio Longoni.
